Everything you need to know about tile and stone.

At Small’s, our years in the industry have taught us a thing or two (or many) about selecting, installing and caring for tile and stone. Whether it’s a how-to, what or where, we probably have the answers you are looking for. If you don’t see it below, please send us an email with your question.

Frequently asked questions:

1. How do I clean my grout and tile?
Please refer to the sealers and cleaner section for specific details.

2. What does PEI mean?
PEI is a classification used to determine abrasion and scratch resistance for the tile surface. Tiles are graded from 0 to 5 with 0 being suitable for walls only and 5 for heavy commercial traffic. Small’s Tile recommends using either a PEI 4 or higher for floor tile installation. Most tiles are suitable for installation on walls.

3. What is the difference between porcelain tile and ceramic?
Ceramic tile is made from finely ground clay and minerals pressed into the shape of the tile. Glaze is then applied to provide the color and texture. It is then fired to harden the tile and melt the glaze.

Porcelain is also made from finely ground clay and minerals but with a much higher quantity of feldspar minerals than clay. It is also pressed into shape but at much higher pressures. It is glazed and undergoes a longer firing process than ceramic. This makes the porcelain harder, stronger and more wear resistant. Unlike ceramic,  porcelain has a very low moisture absorption rate which allows it to be used for interior and exterior applications. That being said, a good quality ceramic tile in a interior residential application will last the life of the home in if installed properly. The staff at Small’s tile can guide you in the correct choice for your tile project.

4. Will all my tiles be the same shade?
Shading is inherent in all tiles. Most tiles are graded from variation 1 to 4 with 4 being substantial. Check the sample board or consult the staff to determine the variation to avoid surprises when it comes to purchase and installation.

5. What are the differences between the Natural stone products you sell?
A brief review of the differences will be outlined below

    • Granite – coarse grained rock generally composed of quartz, mica and feldspar crystals. Extremely hard and durable and resistant to scratching.
    • Limestone – sedimentary rock primarily composed of calcium and formed by the crystallization of water and the accumulation of shell and shell fragments. Suitable for many floor and wall applications
    • Travertine – a form of limestone usually formed near mineral rich springs. Gas becomes trapped and creates a pitted surface on the stone. Commonly used for residential installations.
    • Slate – a metamorphic rock formed when ocean or river sediments are heated by the earth’s crust. Generally has a cleft surface in tile form. Excellent for flooring and can be used on exterior applications if dense enough.
    • Marble – a metamorphic rock formed from limestone. Impurities present affect the mineral composition which give marble a wide variety of colors. Used mainly for interior applications. It is absorbent and porous and scratches fairly easy.

Note: All natural stone must be sealed. Shading is inherent. Inspect before installing.
